Activities

Events for the month are posted on the bulletin board next to the nurses’ station. A monthly newsletter and calendar is sent out with the billing for the month. A monthly calendar is also placed in each resident’s room. Residents are assisted to and from activities when necessary.

Guests

Except for holidays, up to ten guests are welcome at lunch and dinner for a charge of $6.   It is a courtesy to plan ahead; tickets can be purchased at the desk on weekdays.  December 24th and 25th at noon are two occasions when we are not able to accommodate guests at the noon meal.

 We have very enjoyable parties at the Manor to which residents are able to bring guests.  However, because of fire regulations, we are required to limit the number of people in the building.  Therefore we can permit only two guests per resident. Residents wanting more than two guests usually invite someone who has no family to join their party and thus increase their own guest limit by two.

Phones

Private phones may be installed in a resident’s room. The resident or guarantor will be responsible for the payment to Bell Canada. Residents are welcome to use the phone in the activity room for local calls.

Television/Cable

Four of the lounges are equipped with television sets operating with the StarChoice satellite TV system. All residents' rooms are also wired for satellite TV reception, but residents are individually responsible for the purchase from StarChoice the programming packages they would like.

Local Newspaper

Arrangements for delivery of the local newspaper,  The Recorder and Times, can be made through the activity office or by contacting the newspaper directly. The paper is delivered to the resident’s room.

Hairdressing

Arrangements can be made through the business office or directly with the hairdresser.

Safe-Keeping

Residents should not leave cash, cheques, valuables or jewellery in their rooms.  Cathy, in the front office, can keep residents' cash in a “trust account”, where it can be obtained as needed  by signing at the desk any weekday.  There is no charge for this service.

Dental Services

Multigen Health Care comes brings a dentist and dental hygienist to the Manor on a regular basis. They will do an initial assessment and ongoing dental work for any resident who requests it. There is a consent from the resident or family to Multigen, and Multigen then bills the family directly. Prices are 20 per cent above the ODA scale which is apparently very competitive with what dentists in private practice are charging. The actual work would be done in the treatment room at Sherwood Park Manor. Multigen is legally responsible for the quality of their own practice.

Treats

Residents enjoy treats! Candies, cookies, and fruit should be brought in small amounts and in sealed containers to retain freshness. In the case of residents on special diets, we ask that "treats" be authorized by the Dietary Supervisor or the Nurse-in-Charge when they are brought in.

Visiting Hours

Residents can be visited daily from 10 AM to 9 PM. The only exception is for acute palliative care when the resident is in the infirmary.

Gift Suggestions

We have put together the following suggestions to assist you in choosing an appropriate gift for your friend or relative at the Home.

*   Toiletries, but not powders
*   Greeting cards with warm, personal messages, or any drawing or item created by a grandchild
*   Costume jewelry. Earrings, necklaces, and pedants or chains long enough to be slipped over the head are best. Men like monogrammed belt buckles. No valuables, please.
*   Washable housecoat (polyester blend) or sweater. These should be sturdy because of the repeated hot water washings they will have to take.
*   Non-slip slippers
*  Jogging suit
*   Leg warmers
*   Anything that allows for the personalizing of rooms, such as framed photos, large calendars, coffee mug, bedside lamp, clock, washable bed comforter, TV, radio, lap blanket, bulletin board, etc.
*   Geriatric chair, pressure sensitive mattress, tilt chair

Try to avoid fancy cookies, nuts, and cheeses, etc, which are difficult to store, even if they do not violate dietary restrictions. If brought in, they must be stored in tins. Whatever you choose, please keep safety in mind, and also clearly identify with a laundry marker or name tag all gifts before bringing them to the Home. If in doubt or if you need further suggestion, talk to the Nurse-in-Charge.

The best gift of all is a visit from you!

Meals and Mealtimes

Meals are served at the following times:

Breakfast -- 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM

Lunch -- 12 noon to 1:00 PM

Dinner -- 5 PM to 6:00 PM

In addition, snacks are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The weekly menus are posted on bulletin boards at several locations within the Home.

The Dietary Supervisor, Judy Gray, is responsible for arranging the residents’ seating within the two dining rooms. Family members and friends are encouraged to share lunch and dinner with residents, but must give notice two hours in advance. The guest meal tickets can be purchased at the administration office during normal business hours. Note that this office s closed on weekends and therefore guest meal tickets for weekend meals must be purchased in advance.

Parking

The Manor has ample free and readily accessible parking adjacent to the main entrance.
