Safeguards

Safety devices such as posey bars, tray chairs, and bedrails are used to ensure the safety of residents should they be deemed necessary by the nursing staff. No other forms of restraint are used. The Manor does not have a locked unit.

Fire Regulations

The facility's Emergency Plan is tested annually. Fire drills are conducted each month for the safety of residents and staff.

Smoking Regulations

It is the policy of Sherwood Park Manor to provide a non-smoking environment in order to maximize the health and safety of staff, residents, volunteers, and visitors.

    For staff, volunteers and visitors:

  • Smoking is prohibited within the premises of Sherwood Park Manor.
  • Smoking is permitted outside at the ramp and courtyard at a distance of at least 9 metres (30 feet) from the entrance.
  • Smoking outside the front entrance is permitted at night from 9 PM until 7 AM.

    For residents:

  • Smoking is permitted outside the front entrance at a distance of 9 metres (30 feet) from the building.

Safety Bracelets

Safety bracelets are worn on wrists or ankles of residents as a safety measure to warn the staff of their exit from the building. All exterior doors are alarmed for the security of our residents.

Raising Concerns

      Policy

Each resident and/or family member will have an accessible means of documenting their concerns regarding care issues within the Manor. This will recognize that a resident or family representative may have an issue or concern from time to time and establish a procedure for the proper handling of these concerns including feedback to the concerned party within a 10 day time frame. It will also provide a means to collect data for our Continuous Quality Improvement Program.

      Procedure

  1. 1. When a resident and/or family representative has a concern they can:
       a. Fill out a Resident Issue Resolution form
       b. Approach a staff member who would have knowledge of this specific area and voice his or her concern
  2. The Resident Issue Resolution forms can be found on the wall outside the Administration Office. After completion of the form, it should be placed in the envelope provided and put in the wooden mail box.
  3. Staff members who receive concerns from residents/family representatives who do not want to fill
out the form, where the solution is not obvious or cannot be dealt within a timely fashion, should complete the Resident Issue Resolution form, place it in the envelope provided and put it in the mail box.
  4. The office staff receiving the form will place the original in the mailbox of the appropriate department manager. A copy will be kept in a binder in the administration office.
  5. Upon resolution of the concern and completion of the form by the department manager, the form will be given to the Administrator for her perusal and signature. She will return the form to the mailbox of the department manager who will place it in the binder and remove the copy.
  6. The manager of each department will compile statistics that will be shared with the management team  as well as with any other appropriate CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) teams.

Alcohol

If an alcoholic beverage is medically prescribed by the physician, the nursing staff will serve the proper amounts. The resident or family is responsible for providing the beverage.

Scents

Some members of our staff are allergic to perfumes and highly scented products.  We would appreciate your not using them when visiting the Manor.

Absences

      For the Day

  • Please notify the nursing staff two hours in advance

      Overnight or Longer

  • The head nurse requires a written note two days in advance. The note should specify the expected period of absence, where the resident will be, and the care that will be provided during the absence

Medications and External Medical Appointments

For the safety of residents, all prescription and over the counter medicines and ointments are stored in the nursing home's secure medicine room and administered by the nursing staff upon the authorization of the physician.

The nursing staff have requested that when residents have external medical appointments, family members inform them at least two days in advance so that the transfer summary, medication list and consent form can be prepared.  If at the appointment, surgery is scheduled, it usually needs to be planned two weeks ahead of time. This will enable the preoperative blood work and ECG to be booked and completed in time.

Visiting Hours

Residents can be visited daily from 10 AM to 9 PM

Wheelchairs and Special Equipment

Residents sometimes require specialized equipment. Because every resident’s needs are different and because the Home has only very limited storage space, we appreciate your consulting with our physiotherapist before you purchase such equipment.

Supervising Physician

Each resident may continue under the supervision of his or her family physician if that physician agrees to comply with Ministry policy. If the family physician is unable to attend to a resident’s medical needs, the administrator will arrange for another physician.

Personal Clothing

All personal clothing must have the resident’s name affixed for proper identification. When gifts of clothing are brought in, please be sure to leave them for marking at the nurse’s station. Periodically residents will be informed that a clothing rack of unidentified clothing will be placed by the elevator for claiming.

When the sad day comes that the resident leaves the Manor, we ask that family members remove the personal possessions as soon as possible.  There are about a hundred people waiting to come in, many somewhat desperate, so we do not have the luxury of delay. We are often asked if we will accept the personal clothing for other residents or a charity.  We regret that we cannot.  We ask that families bring suitable containers and take the items to the charity of their choice.

Married or Same-Sex Couples

Accommodation for couples is available at the Home. However, each spouse or partner must be admitted individually as vacancies occur. Every effort will then be made to place couples in the same room when requested.

Health Care Services

The resident’s physician must approve all health-related procedures.

Foot care, laboratory and pharmacy services are available at the Home, but in some cases extra charges may apply.

Appointments for extramural services like eye doctors, dentists and the like are arranged by the nursing staff of the Home, but the family is responsible for transporting and assisting the resident when making use of extramural services.
