JULY and AUGUST  NEWSLETTERS

 JULY 2008 NEWSLETTER

On May 21, 2008 the Auxiliary hosted their Annual General Meeting and Luncheon. During the business portion of the meeting, we learned that the Auxiliary provides in excess of 2400 volunteer hours at the Manor, donated $5,000 towards the purchase of a new tub, $1,481 to assist with residents’ transportation, $1,200 to subsidize hairdressing costs, $632 for flowers, and approximately $400.00 for Christmas gifts for our residents. As you can see, the Auxiliary is very active at Sherwood Park Manor and I am truly at a loss for words in expressing our appreciation for all that they do.

Sherwood Park Manor Auxiliary’s Yard Sale and Bake Table took place on June 21, 2008. Thank you to all of you who generously supported this successful project. A total of over $2,000 was raised for resident care, supplies and equipment.

When you are visiting, please take a minute to review our Continuous Quality Improvement Program on the bulletin board across from the elevator. We can provide you with an update on the plans of our various teams and the work they do on behalf of our residents. In addition, the Sherwood Park Manor Strategic plan is also posted, please take a minute to review and provide any comments that you may have.

We remind everyone that as the warmer weather approaches, so do ants and spiders. We would appreciate you checking to ensure that any sweets your family member has in their room are placed in a sealed container. As well, we would like to request that windows remain closed to ensure that the air conditioning system operates with the highest degree of efficiency.

The Sherwood Park Manor Annual General Meeting took place on May 28, 2008. A copy of the Annual Report is posted on the Bulletin Board across from the elevator if you wish to take a few minutes and review it.

Please circle July 17, 2008 on your calendar. Our Family Council, in conjunction with Sherwood Park Manor will be hosting a family BBQ at the Manor from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. More details will be available at a later date. Please pass the word along to your family members.

As you are aware, Sherwood Park Manor introduced Cogeco Cable to the facility in June. We have had a few minor snags throughout this process, but generally speaking, everything seems to be working well. Please do not forget to contact Cogeco Cable to confirm your intentions for continued service. As well, we ask that you include Linda Woods name when you enroll in the service. This authorization will allow Linda to contact Cogeco on behalf of our residents should the need arise.

You may have noticed the first stages of a pergola being built in our patio. Last fall a seasonal gazebo blew over the fence, leaving us with no shelter against the warm sun. The Lioness Club of Brockville graciously donated $1,000. for the construction of the pergola. Please join me in extending a sincere thank you to the Lioness Club for their wonderful donation. No doubt it will be greatly appreciated be everyone at the Manor.

The Auxiliary in partnership with the Life Enrichment Program and our volunteers at Sherwood Park Manor hosted their Annual Father’s Day Luncheon on June 19th. Thank you to everyone for their much appreciated assistance.

It gives me great pleasure to share with you that Bonnie Monteith is retiring on June 30th. Her last day to work is Friday June 27th. Please join me in wishing Bonnie well in her retirement. She will be missed by everyone! We hope she will visit frequently…maybe come back and volunteer for us!!! Jackie Humble has accepted the position as Life Enrichment Assistant.

Finally, as we enjoy these warm summer days, please remember to take a few minutes each day and enjoy the many blessings we have.

August 2008 Newsletter

It’s hard to believe that July is drawing to a close…and summer is quickly moving along. Where does the time go?

During the month of July we have been very busy at the Manor. We’ve had many summertime activities, including lots of music, food, and good times. Many thanks are extended to our entire team at the Manor for assisting us to ensure that our residents are able to participate in the many planned events. Thank you to all our volunteers for helping us facilitate these exciting activities!

The Manor in conjunction with the Family Council hosted our summer Family BBQ on July 17th. It was wonderful to have so many family members join us for the evening. Donations received during the evening exceeded $600.00; these funds will be added to the Para Transit Fund for 2009.

If you are escorting a resident to a family outing or a medical appointment, please remember to complete the "Sign Out Sheet" located at the Nurses’ Station prior to leaving. We are required to monitor our residents’ whereabouts at all times and we must account for those residents who are on leave. If you are attending a medical appointment, please be sure to pick up any medical documents (referral form, list of current medications) from the Nurses’ Station prior to your departure. Often there is medical information completed at the appointment and we require this information returned to the Nurses’ Station following the appointment. This will ensure that any new recommendations or new Doctor’s orders are recorded.

Smiths Shoes are available to visit Sherwood Park Manor to complete custom fitting and sales for residents who need shoes. Of course this depends on an adequate demand for the service. If your family member requires shoes and wishes to see someone from Smiths, please call Linda Woods at 613-342-5531 and let her know. When she has a list of prospective customers, she will contact Smiths to set up an appointment.

We are planning a 1000 Island Boat Cruise for August 21, at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for an 11/2 hour cruise leaving Brockville. Para Transit has been scheduled to provide transportation to and from Blockhouse Island. We need some volunteers to assist with the residents. If you are available to assist with your family member or another resident, please let Linda know at your earliest convenience.

In September we will be hosting a "Celebration of Life" Service to honour all those residents who passed away between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. Current residents, staff, families and volunteers are welcome to attend this special event. A social time will follow the service. We will confirm the date and time in the September Newsletter.

As we enjoy the warm days of summer…and the rainy days too…let’s take a few minutes each day and enjoy the many blessings we have.
