Accreditation

The Manor was accredited for the first time in 1984 by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. This accreditation is your assurance that Sherwood Park Manor meets the most exacting standards of care, but it is also a tribute to the dedication and hard work of all our employees, some of whom have been with us from the beginning. Today the Manor is one of only three fully-accredited nursing home in the community.

Business Office Hours

The Business Office is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday to Friday, except holidays.

History of Sherwood Park Manor

The Original Building

Beginning before 1972, the Boards of the two local hospitals, the Brockville General Hospital and the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, had discussed the need for a nursing home in the Brockville area. Acute and chronic care beds were often occupied by persons who did not need this type of care and it was needlessly costly to maintain them in a hospital. A study also showed that the Leeds and Grenville counties had a significantly higher ratio of persons over the age of 65 than the provincial average. On February 6th, 1973, the Boards of both hospitals undertook to develop this project jointly. A committee became the first Board of Directors of Sherwood Park Manor, with Mr. Duncan Fraser as the first Chair.

The hospitals and the Board agreed that the area was best served by a non-profit nursing home in which the community would have a sense of ownership. The project received the support of local business, industry and municipal governments, including Brockville, Prescott and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. The community developed a strong sense of pride in its nursing home and has continued its generous support of Sherwood Park Manor over the years.

The Board inspected several possible sites for the new nursing home and chose the present location on County Road 2 because it offered easy access. The name of the Home derives from the Sherwood family that had originally owned the land. The Brockville Psychiatric Hospital ceded the property to the Manor and the nearby St. Lawrence Lodge shared their expertise in staffing and food service, etc. The design chosen by the Board incorporated extra wide corridors, private and semi-private bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and wide, wheelchair accessible doorways. At that time, it was considered the most innovative in the province.

The MPP, the Honourable James Ault, broke the sod to begin construction on October 24, 1974. The official opening occurred on February 27, 1976, although the first residents were admitted on December 30, 1975.

Chapel and Activity Centre

In 1990 the need for a chapel and activity centre became urgent. Activation programs had become less effective, since many residents resisted going to the windowless basement activities room. A new combined chapel and activities centre was built from the proceeds of a community-wide fundraising campaign. Today this bright centre offers inter-denominational religious services, music therapy, and a wide variety of recreational, craft, and social programs.

The Fulford Wing

The historic Fulford Home in Brockville had in recent years been operating as a nursing home to 34 residents, but the building, despite its elegance and homey atmosphere, was increasingly unable to meet the demanding physical standards of a modern nursing home. In 1999 the Boards of Sherwood Park Manor and of Fulford Home combined and began planning a new addition to Sherwood Park Manor to accommodate the Fulford Home residents. Again, the design chosen for this 32-bed addition incorporated the most exacting standards of comfort, convenience, treatment and safety in the province. The first residents transferred over in January, 2001, and the official opening occurred in April, 2001, in the presence of the local MPP, the Honourable Robert Runciman.

Mission Statement

We at Sherwood Park Manor will work together to ensure that

·         Care provided by the Manor meets the highest standard based on current knowledge and practices and in compliance with current legislation.

·         The atmosphere is conducive to the dignity and well being of the residents, and their special needs and wishes are considered in all aspects of planning

·         Partnerships are encouraged with health care and community agencies, educational institutions, and hospitals throughout the area to provide clinical experience for students.

·         We are committed to continued staff education and training to ensure the highest level of resident care within our resources.

  •         We are committed to the well being of our staff.

Donations and Bequests

Sherwood Park Manor is a not-for-profit, charitable organization.  It is managed by a voluntary Board of Directors and as such has no external source of funding.  This differs from municipal homes that can be assisted with tax dollars or privately owned ones where profits from investors can be redirected toward immediate needs.  Consequently Sherwood Park Manor depends largely upon private donations and “in memoriam” gifts to fund the replacement of furnishings and equipment and to upgrade the interior and exterior when it is needed.  Such gifts are much appreciated, and all donors receive tax receipts.

Visiting Hours

Residents can be visited daily from 10 AM to 9 PM
