We would like to express our deepest appreciation for all the Manor did for our loved one during her stay. 

So many of you came to tell me how much you enjoyed interacting with her and hearing her dry wit. We managed to meet most of her caregivers but thank you for all the work you have done. 

We know it was a challenge to find things for her to eat, and that she was difficult at times, but we appreciate the effort in meeting her needs. 

All the staff we saw treated all the residents with patience and care. It was wonderful our loved one lived in a place where she could experience that atmosphere.

As an employee of Sherwood Park Manor, I was quite moved by a conversation had with the daughter of one of our residents, who has recently passed away. During our extensive phone discussion, the resident’s daughter who-for confidentiality reasons, I will refer to as Tee, had some many kind words to share about Sherwood Park Manor, but mostly about the staff at Sherwood Park Manor. She began the conversation by explaining that she has no major complaints to make regarding the days leading up to her mother’s death, nor regarding the four years that her mom spent with us.

Tee feels that the “quality of care” given to her mom during her stay, was “exceptional.”  She further explains the “knowledge, empathy and approach to care” displayed by the staff is what she feels, “sets us apart” from other facilities. She continued to tell me that the physical contact displayed by the staff; be it a hug, a tap on the back, or a handshake, and the general way staff approached her mom over the course of her stay, made a big difference in the quality of life that her mom had while here. She described Sherwood’s employees as a “tight knit staff from a small town” who “work very well together.” She could see this when she came to visit her mom, and according to her, this is not something she’s seen in any other facility. She described us as “Aces” who were there for the family as well as for her mom.

At the time of her mom’s death, Tee was very grateful for the “gentle and kind” approach that the staff took with her, as well as with her mom.   She emphasized how grateful she was for the calm and comforting words the nurse on duty chose when calling her to let her know that her mother was not doing well. She highlighted the comfort she felt by the simple “presence” of those around. She attested that “everyone was excellent” and feels that the staff “masterfully handled” the moments leading up to her mom’s passing.  Sincerely, she described how moved she was when a code butterfly was called as her mom was wheeled away in transition to a new place.

I know that our work here is not always easy. I wish everyone could have heard the encouraging words spoken by this woman about those of us who work here, trying to better the lives of the residents one day at a time. Although we may sometimes lose sight of this ultimate goal, I see everyday staff helping one another in hopes of brightening the days for one another, but mostly for those who live here.  I can genuinely say that I am proud to be an employee of Sherwood Park Manor.

It is bittersweet for me currently in my career where I am starting a new chapter in my life as a nurse. Unfortunately, I have decided to pursue my nursing career at the loss of my wonderful position in the Life Enrichment department. There have been so many great memories throughout the years, for which the position did not really feel like a job but more of a family. Most of all, the residents here very much appreciate everything you do for them. Many people still come up to me to this day, thanking me and the department for the care, dedication and love we have provided while at the Manor.

I was working evenings on the North Wing and walked into a resident’s room to check on her. I didn’t notice that she had visitors present, as they were sitting quietly in the corner of the room.

As I said ‘hello’ to the resident, she turned and gave me a hug, and told me I was her favourite worker. As I was walking out the visitors came up to me and thanked me for taking such good care of their loved one. 

The main thing about working at Sherwood Park Manor, is the overall positive environment. Everyone is optimistic and helpful. I enjoy being employed as a RN.
